False Unicorn Root
(Chamaelirium luteum)

Key Components: Steroidal saponins including chamaelirin (a precursor of estrogen). Glycosides.
Preparations & dosage: Decoction: 1-2 tsp per cup of water simmered 10-15 minutes. Tincture:
Actions:
Foundational: Astringent. Bitter.
Primary: Aphrodesiac. Diuretic. Emmenagogue.
Secondary: Amphoteric. Tonic.
Uses:
Balancing production of hormones.
Painful & irregular menstruation.
Used in formulas for morning sickness as well as to prevent miscarriage.
Hormonal migraines
Help to tone tissues in the uterus
uterine prolaps.
Said to be just as helpful for the male reproductive system.
Ovarian pain.
An indication for False unicorn root would be someone who has depression or irritability associated with chronic reproductive issues.
Another indication would be someone who says they feel like their reproductive organs are going to fall out. Combines well with: Blu cohosh, Cramp Bark, Skullcap, Valerian.
Identifying: The root is curved and is said to resemble the horn of a unicorn with an end that appears as if it has been bitten off.
Growing: A Herbaceous perennial that grows well in zones 4-8. Likes moist acidic soil.
Harvesting: Harvest the root in the fall (Sept/Oct- ish).
Contraindications: Large amounts have been said to cause nausea and vomiting though I've not been able to find anyone that has discovered what that large dose might be. Endangered in the wild. Only organically cultivated sources should be used.
